Introduction
Why accept taw’heed and reject shirk? Why the divine insistence on making taw’heed the center of human creed? Why is taw’heed the foundation of God’s religion, Islam?
It appears to me in answering these questions that God wants for the human being as an individual, via servitude to Him alone, to be saved from the evil of discord and swaying between numerous deities; that God wants for human society to not live in a state of conflict as a result of the plurality of creeds, deities, and religions. This is given the fact that the presence of various belief systems due to the belief in several deities leads human society towards constant clashes.

The Outcomes of Taw’heed & Shirk
Through the belief in taw’heed – by which all people without exception follow the direction of the One God, seek one single objective, and follow a single religious order – humanity is safe from these clashes, and hence spares itself many pains and concerns. As a result, the humankind is then capable of devoting all its available potential to achieving happiness, developing civilization, and enriching life.
Meanwhile, if we revisit some of the pagan belief systems and even others which are based on the notion of polytheism, we find these clashes clearly manifesting in them. This is only natural considering the fact that each deity has its followers, party, and supporters; as well as the fact that those deities themselves are in a clash with one another.
An Example: Hinduism
For instance, we find that in the creed of Hinduism, three deities are worshipped: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver for what Brahma created, and Shiva is the destroyer of that creation. This entailed clashes between these deities, which is why Hindus were divided into two groups – those who followed Vishnu, the preserver, and those who followed Shiva, the destroyer.
Conclusion
Therefore, only in taw’heed is the human being’s salvation from all of that which leads to conflict with oneself, and with others; only taw’heed saves a human being from disarray, perplexion, and anxiety. Meanwhile, in shirk is the human being’s destruction and diversion from the purpose for which they exist in this life. It is for this reason that we accept taw’heed and reject shirk.
The Definition of Taw’heed
The Oneness of God implies three things: God’s existential Oneness in the sense that He has no partners, God’s essential Oneness in the sense that He is not compounded, and God’s oneness in His attributes in the sense that nothing resembles Him.
